19th century Collingwood Church to be demolished

A centuries-old Catholic church in Collingwood partially ruined in a 2007 fire will be demolished as part of redevelopment plans for the site.

The St Joseph's church suffered major damage in April 2007 because of a blaze reportedly caused by an electrical fault. Less than half of the original structure remains, which was completed in 1862.

There has been no action on the redevelopment until proposed plans were put on display earlier in February.

According to the plans, the church remains and a nearby community hall will be demolished and a new library and
playground will be built for use by the adjacent St Joseph's Catholic Primary school.

A prayer hall that is also on the site will be renovated and include an 80-seat worship hall to accommodate larger groups.

The community can view the plans at the site and provide feedback on the proposed development.
