Sunny times at 2010 Harvest Festival

The 2010 Harvest Festival that happened at the base of the Collingwood Housing Estate over the weekend brought together the diverse local community on a gorgeous day. In its 10th year, it was deemed to be one of the best so far.

The community-run garden was at the centre of the festival. Residents have access to their own plot that they must take care of, growing local and exotic produce. As well as providing nutritional awareness, the gardens also provide a social outlet and is therapeutic for the residents. The produce of the day was corn, perfect for this time of the year.

Stalls such as the 'Artrageous workshop' and free face painting were a hit with the kids, while the Save the Children 'Giant Toy Box' taught the importance of play to children and adults alike. Many Native American Corn Dollies were made while kids potted their own herbs nearby. The biggest attraction by far for the younger festival-goers was the Stitches 'Jungle Slide'.

The vibrant MC kept the crowd amused between acts on the main stage. Rappers, drummers, local rock bands, Vietnamese choir groups and even belly dancers adding to the diverse entertainment.  Everyone had their go, with performers young and old taking to the stage.

MP Richard Wynne made a speech and welcomed the crowd before enjoying the festivities for himself. He explained that while it was fantastic that residents enjoyed the day, it was also a key event that brought people from all over Yarra to the estate.

Nobody went hungry on the day with cooking displays, a bbq and free dumplings (With potent garlic sauce!) Banana fritters were also available for those with a sweet tooth, which supported the local Collingwood youthspace through a gold coin donation.

Organiser John Bainbridge was thrilled with the way the day panned out,

"It's been fantastic…there's always teething problems, you're not quite sure what's going to go along…but the people have been really fantastic…the weather has been beautiful."

From humble beginnings to becoming a significant Collingwood event, the Harvest Festival was once again a success, celebrating food, music and the Yarra community.
