On December the 1st, 2009 the City of Yarra imposed a 24-hour drinking ban, making it the last council in Victoria to pass law number 8. Vic Police and the City of Yarra hope that it will curb the alcohol related violence, but some social welfare groups are concerned that it may target disadvantaged communities.

Problem is *Drunken Behaviour*, not public consumption.
Most of the situations covered by the Mayor are from people who get drunk AT licensed venues, a ban on drinking while sitting in/walking down the street does nothing to address this. AND This law will do nothing to address the large groups of well dressed rowdy and boisterous suburban tourists on Friday and Saturday nights who roam the streets moving from venue to venue, pissing and vomiting in residential side streets.
What the public drinking law DOES do is create yet another instrument for the police to use against homeless and disadvantaged people who cant afford to drink in fancy bars.
