AN upcoming council meeting will aim to quell the controversy generated by the Yarra Council's implementation of the public drinking ban.
Key issues of the future of a 24-hour public drinking ban in Yarra were unresolved during a heated council meeting in late March.
The law was first introduced in late 2009 but was overturned at the meeting, after the Greens Party withdrew its support unless the ban only applied in the evenings.
The events also prompted a councillor to tender his resignation.
However, the revised ban was placed on hold because two councillors were absent from the meeting. The 24-hour ban - known as local law eight - remains in place.
Councillor Dale Smedley, an independent, threatened to resign because the motion was tabled while two councillors were absent. He accused the councillors representing the Greens and Socialist party of an ambush.
"The council had voted for a six month renewal on everything. There were a couple of councillors away so people seized the opportunity to overturn what the full council had voted on previously." Cr Smedley said.
"No one knew about it and what they were intending to do."
The claims were refuted by councillor Sam Gaylard, of the Greens party, who said the report was on the agenda. In terms of the absent councillors,
"I raised this issue with the mayor, I went and got advice from senior officers" he said. "They [The opposition] knew they could stop this if they wanted to."
The Greens Party's councillors withdrew their support based on a report's findings that some local indigenous communities have been negatively impacted by the ban.
"We had this report in front of us with anecdotal information. We read it and were alarmed by it. We have a position to put forward," he said.
"What this law is doing is dealing with a social and historical issue in a law and order approach that is basically making the Parkies disappear, while people are drinking publicly in cafes during the day." he said
The issues are set to be resolved at the next meeting on April 20, according to Cr Smedley.
"The next meeting will put back into place what was there before."
