August 28, 1999 marked the end of an era. After 107 years Collingwood Football Club were leaving Victoria Park. It was an emotional day for any Collingwood supporter.

Fast forward to November 10, 2008, after 10 years of planning, the future of Victoria Park has finally been determined. The redevelopment planning of Victoria Park known as the “Master Plan”, which has been in process since 2004 by the City of Yarra council and has been given approval to proceed by Heritage Victoria.

They come from Cambodia, China and the Philippines but the choristers of the Many Moons choir are united in song.

The members of this multicultural group, one of several choirs drawn from the housing estates of the City of Yarra, sing together as a way of breaking their social isolation, learning a new language and broadening employment opportunities. Choir members say it is also a kind of emotional therapy.

An exhibition taking a closer look at Burmese peoples’ lives was held in mid June to commemorate the UN Refugee Day, as part of Multicultural Arts Victoria’s Emerge Festival.

“Love Burma Love Freedom” exhibits art works of three artists with different artistic backgrounds and experiences, who are united in their passion of Burma and its people.  The exhibition attempts to show lives of Burmese people are about more than just the political problems that have plagued the country for decades.

In March 2009, Melbourne played host to the L’Oreal Fashion Festival. This event, which included Australia’s leading designers, was an important annual gathering for the industry. While the drawcards included big name celebrities such as former Miss Universe, Jennifer Hawkins, the media also turned its attention to several young women of Sudanese origin.

Collingwood housing estate residents’ digital inclusion project won a prestigious national technology award this week.

Wired@Collingwood, a project that aims to increase computer literacy amongst residents of Collingwood’s public housing estate, won the Australian Community iAward, one of five special awards contested by 74 finalists at the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) iAwards - Australia’s leading industry awards for the information and communication technology sector.

Fitzroy Learning Network will celebrate Refugee Week by organising a party to raise awareness of the plight of refugees.

On the day, the network will have an open door policy for new migrants where they can come and ask questions, get to know the refugee support worker, find out about the network’s services and have lunch together.

West Papuan asylum seekers’ desire for their country to be independent from Indonesia is bolder after the Australian government granted them Permanent Residency in late May.

“We never wished to come to Australia to build our future," said Jacob Rumbiak, one of the West Papuan leaders in Melbourne attending a ceremony to mark the announcement, "the right of self determination and political independence from Indonesia is our future.”
